Racial Discrimination in Workplace Overcoming Racial Discrimination

Racial Discrimination in the Workplace

Racial discrimination is a deplorable act that unfortunately exists, in far too many places. It is a costly and deadly disease that appears to have a never-ending story. It is as vile and deceptive as the swine flu; it looks and feels like something it is not. In 2009, this should not exist, however it does. The questions I have come to ask are as follows: why does it exist; what is the purpose of it; what can we do to overcome it?

This country has had a well that runs deep of racial tension. However, in today’s time, racial discrimination is not secluded to the idea of black and white. We are a nation that is multicultural and multiracial, and because of this, almost everyone can feel racially discriminated against. Tension has been carried over from generation to generation and has expanded its wicked arms well into our future. Does it exist because of the need for power? Does it exist because of the fear in becoming obsolete?

Yes, there are places you can go to fight, after you have exhausted other avenues, outside of the business. At this point, you must think is it worth it? Should I be the person that fights this fight? Should I leave, and not say or do anything? The problem with these questions is that these are the very reasons racial discrimination has not been put into its proper place. There are not enough individuals that speak against it; too many individuals walk away, with the idea of just fighting another day.

Personally, I think it is a bully tactic. Racial discrimination structure is no different then the big kid on the playground, picking on the smaller children. It is a cowardice act. The fear is the lack of control over a place, a surrounding, or a being. The problem with racial discrimination nobody can assume power over another being. In today’s workplace, regardless of title, money, or position, you cannot assume power over a place and an environment. The risks are too high and your reputation should be too dear. So, why condone it?

Overcoming racial discrimination is a hard bargain. It is a hard thing to survive. It is OK to not notice when it has happened immediately. That just means simply you were not expecting its existence. After it has been recognized, speak with the proper authorities. If this does not get you anywhere, seriously consider what you have at stake. Is it worth fighting this day?
