Do Victims of Racism or Sexism Suffer more - Sexism

While both racism and sexism cause a great amount of harm to many people within society, sexism ultimately occurs more and causes more damage. First one must only look at some of the obvious statistics. For instance, a woman on average makes $.75 for every dollar a man makes. Furthermore, when applying for a job, a company is often less likely to hire a woman who is married and has kids, where as a man is more likely to get that same job if he is married and has kids. It is also much more difficult to prove sexism. In general people seem more willing to believe that someone was acting prejudice to a person on the basis of their race, than they are to believe that someone was being discriminated against because of their sex. Sexism can also occur to anyone at anytime. For instance, a woman who has climbed the ladder at work may feel threatened by up and coming male coworkers and thus be less willing to offer them a promotion.

One cannot discuss sexism without discussing sexual harassment and sexual assault. While not all sexual assault can be blamed on sexism, it can at least be considered to play a significant role in many cases. Psychologically for someone to commit such an act requires a sense of entitlement. The believe that someone else is inferior because of their sex can only serve to add to that sense of entitlement. It should also be noted that not many if any rapists are also strong advocates for women’s rights. If one were to agree that sexism also plays a role in many domestic abuse cases, one must only read to paper to see that people suffer more from sexism than racism. Recent statistics show that most black men are murdered or assaulted by other black men, but if a woman is murdered or assaulted, men who are close to her are often the first people the police look at. Additionally, the fact that most often when a woman is murdered it is at the hands of her husband, points straight towards victims of sexism suffering more. A person who feels they have the right to beat and even murder their spouse does not believe in that person as an equal and sex is often used as the rationale for that view. This also adds another reason why victims of sexism suffer more. It is very possible to be married, manipulated, and controlled by the very person who is victimizing them. Where as a victim of racism may have to deal with it on the street or at work, they more often have the ability to move away. The cycle of abuse in this sort of relationship can go on for the duration of the victims life with little to no escape. The fact that sexism can occur to anyone, at anytime, and at any location is what makes those victims ultimately suffer more.
