The Extent to which Mexican Americans have Maintained a Distinctive Cultural Identity
Research conducted by various organizations revealed that in the year 2010, the total population of Mexicans living in America was above thirty-one million. This count included the legal and illegal immigrants. The huge number has been the major reason why to a greater extent they have been able to maintain their cultural heritage. Culture is what makes people who they are. It defines behavior and society set up. Without culture many people would probably be lost. Here are some ways in which Mexican Americans have maintained their Hispanic culture while living in a foreign country.
One recreational activity Mexicans love is football or soccer. They have thus maintained their heritage by watching, and playing the game. They are passionate soccer fans and always support their home teams in addition to other foreign teams. Many Mexican communities have also formed soccer clubs and teams and this brings them together.
They have maintained their identity through their religious beliefs. Ninety percent of them are Catholics while five percent still believe in spiritualism. One cannot miss the rosaries and statues of their holy saints in their homes. They always light candles beside these saints when praying. Mexicans are also firm believers in karma; whereby if you do good, then success will follow but doing evil will only bring evil to the home.
Their Spanish language has also been upheld. The language is taught in schools as part of the curriculum. They communicate in this language from time to time especially during family gatherings. Language is therefore a cultural link to their original country.
Family is very important for Mexicans no matter what part of the country they may be in. One house may be home to generations of a family. This means both the nuclear and extended family may live under one roof.
They still uphold their cultural festivals and holidays. They include Semana Santa or Holy week. It is celebrated by Christian Mexicans and it is a reminder of the gift of having eternal life through Christ Jesus. Day of the Dead is a mystical celebration where they remember their deceased ones and if possible reunite with them. The Calle Ocho Festival is the most popular holiday attended by more than one million people. They hold a party in one of the Latino blocks and simply have a great time.
Mexican cuisine is probably one of the most distinct ways in which Mexican Americans have maintained their culture. Margaritas, Tacos, Burritos, Fajitas and Quesadillas are irresistible delicacies. They also love their music and still have Mariachis who are always ready to entertain.
The Mexican American population continues to increase despite various efforts by the Government to limit the number entering in America. They are however a lovable lot who are always willing to spread their joy to people.
