Moon gods around the world

The Moon is widely known as a source of inspiration for poets. The Moon is a creative source for legendary tales in various cultures. Some moon Gods are female in some cultures around the world and some are male. It is time to enter the portal of mythologies for different moon Gods and Goddesses in diversified cultures around the world.

Selene was a lunar deity in Greek mythology. Selene served a vital role in her pantheon before Olympic pantheon. She was the daughter of the Titans Hyperion and Thea. She is portrayed as a beautiful woman with a pale face and long black hair. Her silver chariot is driven by a pair of horses or bull or serpentine dragons. Helios (Sun) is known as her brother in pre-Olympian divine genealogy.

Artemis followed and assumed the moon Goddess role in the Olympian pantheon. Artemis is depicted as beautiful and athletic and a tomboy regarding traits. She is considered as the moon Goddess in three worlds; she is called Luna in the heavens, Artemis in the Earth, Hecate in the underworld. She is regarded as the twin sister of Apollo.

The Inuits called their moon God Annigan. He chased his sister Malina (Sun Goddess). He forgot to eat and became thin. He disappeared for three days, every month to fulfill his hunger and returned. The story provided the explanation for the new moon and full moon, following the Inuit’s belief.

Chandra was the ancient moon God in Hindu mythology. Soma followed and assumed the moon God role later. Hindus believed that he rode a chariot drawn by white horses. Soma is also known for a drink, - an exclusive elixir for heavenly Gods to grant immortality. Hindus believed that moon held this drink and Gods drank. Their belief form the basis for the new moon and full moon.

The Babylonian Sin (moon) was their ancient deity. Mount Sinai’s name seemed to have its origin in the Babylonian Syn (moon).

Shinto is the oldest Japanese religion. According to their legendary beliefs, Izanagi no Mikoto helped in the creation of the Moon God, Tsuki-yomi from his right eye. Tsuki-yomi inherited the sky as his domain as the moon God.

Sumerian moon God was known as Sin. Sumerian civilization thrived 3000 years ago in Mezopotamia. He is depicted as a man with a beard and a crescent symbol.  He was known as the chief or father of Gods.

Luna was an ancient moon Goddess in the Roman mythology. Diana was also known as moon Goddess after Luna. Her parents were Jupiter and Latona. She was the twin sister of Apollo.

Ix Chel was the old moon Goddess in the Mayan mythology. Mayans link human events with the cycles of the moon. Her husband was Itzamma, the benevolent moon God.

Mani is considered as the depiction of moon God in the Norse mythology. He is the son of Mundilfari, the giant.

Moon gods and goddesses formed the basis for various cultural beliefs and tales around the world. Some cultures believe that the moon’s cycle and the crops’ life-cycle are linked.
