Mens Changing Role in Society
Men have played a significant role in American society as the main breadwinner, and protector of the family. But the traditional role of men bearing sole monetary responsibility is changing with traditional roles being cast aside as men are being replaced by women who are making money in the workplace, and who are also becoming a breadwinner, if not the sole breadwinner.
Society is changing with women going to college, and gaining jobs. It may even happen in several years time where women are given sole earning responsibility in American society as the main breadwinner of the family. That is due in part to women gained working privileges equal to men in the 1970’s.
Up until the 1970’s, men were the traditional family breadwinners, while women stayed home, raised the kids, made dinner every night, cleaned the house, and ran all of the errands. Men went to work every day, making enough money to buy a nice home, buy a new car every so often.
The role of men in American society was not a complex role, but it was demanding with men dying of heart attacks and strokes in their 50’s and 60’s, probably due more in part to the ill effects of bad nutrition, and smoking. Back in the days before women went to career college, and gained a major foothold in corporate life, men were seen as the people who brought home the bacon, while women stayed home cooking the bacon. This was all before feminism, and the pro-women era took place in the 1970s.
Once women were afforded the opportunity to work in the same jobs men once held, men’s more traditional foothold in the workplace was loosened, and toppled over. Women were given bigger jobs with more responsibility. But women were given these jobs with less pay than men were getting. The practice is still happening today, with millions of women taking jobs with major responsibly with less pay than men.
The role of men in American society is changing with more women going to college, and obtaining careers; men are playing more untraditional roles at home.
Women are still giving birth to the kids, but are going to work to earn money to pay the bills, while men are staying home raising the kids, running errands, cleaning, making dinner. More men than ever before can be found at home watching the kids, while mom is slaving away to bring home the bacon. Young children, boys as well as girls, are being raised with dad at home taking care of the kids. Young boys are the products of this current day growing tradition.
Millions of families are also raising their young with mom and dad sharing all of the responsibilities. With baby boomer couples having worked, and now seeking retirement, younger generations are changing the traditional role of men in American society. Men are doing more at home with women working. Men are making meals, running errands, cleaning the house, and helping to raise the kids.
Today’s role of men in American society is more of a shared role, with a more undefined role. Men are working jobs, and doing housework while raising the kids. Moms are working also while cleaning, cooking and raising the kids. Therefore, currently, men’s role in American society is more of a shared role. Men no longer bear sole material responsibility for the American family.
