Major Greek Gods and Goddesses

The Major gods
Zeus: He is the king of all the gods and goddesses. He controls the sky. He makes the sun and moon come and go. He changes the seasons. When he gets angry, he hurls thunderbolts. He is famous for falling in love often and being unfaithful to his wife/sister, Hera. His symbols are the shield, oak tree, eagle, and thunderbolt.
Poseidon: He is the god of the sea. He is also the god of earthquakes and horses. When he’s in a good mood, he creates new lands in the sea and there is a calm sea. Although, when he’s in a bad mood, he causes earthquakes, shipwrecks, drownings, and unruly springs. His symbols are the trident, it’s his main weapon of choice, the bull, and horse. He is married to Amphitrite.
Hades: He’s the god of the underworld. He possess all the riches of the earth because he owned everything that lay in the ground. He is considered the black sheep of the gods and goddesses. His symbols are the helmet, medals, and jewels.
Hestia: She is the most sweetest and generous of all the gods and goddesses. She is the goddess who protected the family and home. She’s never married. She never takes sides during an argument. Her symbol is fire.
Hera: She’s the wife of Zeus. She was adored by married woman. She could never keep Zeus in line and spent most of her time being jealous, which is perfectly reasonable. Her symbols are the peacock and crow.
Aphrodite: She’s the goddess of love. She was forced to marry Hephaestus who she didn’t like. She has a magic belt that made people fall in love with her. Her symbols are the dove, myrtle, sparrow, and swan. There are differing stories to how she was borne. Some say from the ocean, or one of Zeus’s many affairs.
Ares: He is the god of war. He was a very violent, passionate guy. He loves wars, violence, and battles. His symbols are the vulture and dog.
Hephaestus: He’s the only god born with a handicap. He’s gentle and good- natured. He’s the god of forge. He is also married to Aphrodite, who he adores. His symbols are fire and Blacksmith’s hammer.
Athena: She’s the goddess of wisdom, arts and crafts, and battles. She was borne fully grown from the head of Zeus. The city of Athens was named after her where she made the olive tree.
Hermes: He’s the god of motion, travelers, sleep and dreams, and commerce. Hermes was very clever, quick and graceful. He was Zeus’s messenger. He wears a gold winged helmet, sometimes silver, to protect himself. His golden- winged sandals gave him serious speed. He carries a magic, golden wand, which was given to him by Apollo. One job given to him was to watch over travelers and tradesmen. Another job was to guide the dead to the Underworld. Hermes symbols are the wand, winged helmet, and winged sandals.
Apollo: He was known to be handsome, talented, and charming. He is the god of archery, music, healing, truth, and light. He is full of goodwill. His symbols are the dolphin, crow, lyre, and laurel. He is the twin brother of Artemis.
Artemis: She is the goddess of children, the moon, and hunt. She is the twin sister of Apollo. She is armed with silver bow and arrows. In some ways, Artemis acts like her brother. She can bring diseases to cities and she can cure them too. Like Hestia and Athena, she never married.
Demeter: She is the goddess of grain, agriculture, and fertility. Her symbol is wheat.
Dionysus: He is the god of wine, vegetation, and theater. His symbols are grapes, wine cups, and wine skins.
